Born in Newry, County Down, Russell (1832 1900) became a QC in 1872. Entering politics, he served as Liberal MP for Dundalk (1880 1885) then Hackney South (1885 1894). He was appointed Attorney General in 1886 and held the post again from 1892 1894, and served as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 1894 1900. Cartoon from Vanity Fair, 5th May 1883.
