The 'goat-sucker of Carolina' Finish:Rolled Mr Punch stamping and kickingBird identified by Catesby as 'Caprimulgus', the goat sucker of Carolina (modern identification: a composite of three birds: Chordeiles minor, the common nighthawk; Caprimulgus carolinensis, the chuck will's widow; Caprimulgus vociferus, the whip poor will). The term 'goat sucker' comes from the folk myth that these birds sucked the milk from goats. The bird is here depicted eating a mole cricket, Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa. Plate 8 from volume I of The
