At the center of the book is a fold out fabric page with handwritten Japanese text

and then those clogged feet

This one is a bit of a mystery, but I'm pretty certain it is a Saul Steinberg image, with his faces drawn on a photograph of standing lamps lined up next to a bus stop sign. The image here is on newsprint type paper, so I have to think clipped from somewhere and framed, and it looks to me like both date to the 1940s or so and indeed it seems quite in keeping
