it seems there was a whole set of them produced (copyright 1947)

And indeed

There seems to be just a tiny bit of warping to the wood of the lid such that it sits just a tiny bit higher on one side - very minor

which probably would have been used to hold thread or buttons

WWII "Furlough" Second Grader's Drawing of Dog with Army Hat handwoven is it beautifulI find this second grader's drawing from 1945 really pretty touching I'd guess created while his father was on leave from WWII. Pretty sophisticated, too, for a 7 or 8 year old, packing in all sorts of feelings of comfort and longing, presence and absence and that little puppy is pretty great! Making it even better is the notation by young S. Robert Sheridan's mother on the back of it: "Bob won third prize for this picture June 1945 when in 2a2 at
