By the time of his death he controlled the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Saint Joseph and Grand Island, Illinois Central, Central of Georgia railway companies, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, and the Wells Fargo Express Company, with wealth estimated at between $200 million and $600 million.
