kilt-measuring-guide

1. Waist (A)

  • Where to Measure: Around your waist at the height of your belly button.
  • How to Measure: Wrap the measuring tape snugly but not tightly to get an accurate measurement. Ensure the tape is level all the way around.

2. Seat (B)

  • Where to Measure: Around the broadest part of your hips and buttocks.
  • How to Measure: Stand naturally with your feet together. Measure the circumference at the widest point, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

3. Length (C)

  • Where to Measure: From the belly button to the desired length of the kilt.
  • How to Measure:
    • Kneel down, keeping your back straight.
    • Ask someone else to measure from your belly button to the middle of your kneecap. This ensures the kilt will traditionally hang at mid-knee.
    • Military-Style Kilt: If you want a military-style kilt, measure to the top of the kneecap instead.

Tip: Always have someone assist you when measuring the length to avoid leaning forward, which can alter the results.

Expected Kilt Length by Height

Your kilt length is typically influenced by your height and body proportions. Use the table below as a guide. If your measurement differs significantly, it’s worth double-checking. Slight variations may reflect personal preferences or individual body shapes.

Kilt Length Guide

  • Height 5' 6" to 5' 7"22" to 22.5" kilt length
  • Height 5' 8" to 5' 9"23" to 23.5" kilt length
  • Height 5' 10" to 5' 11"24" to 24.5" kilt length
  • Height 6' to 6' 2"24.5" to 25.5" kilt length
  • Height 6' 3" to 6' 4"26" to 26.5" kilt length
  • Height 6' 5" to 6' 7"27" to 27.5" kilt length

Notes

  • Accuracy: When measuring, always check the length from the belly button to the desired end point (mid-knee or top of the knee).
  • Body Shape: If you have a shorter torso or longer legs, your kilt length may slightly differ from the guide.
  • Personal Preference: Some prefer a slightly shorter or longer kilt for style or comfort—feel free to adjust within reason.

1. Waist (A)

  • Where to Measure: Around your waist at the height where you want the kilt to sit.

    • For a modern fit or a lower waist, measure at the exact height where you'd like the kilt to sit.
    • Important: If you're choosing a non-traditional waistline, inform the maker to ensure the fit matches your preference.

2. Seat (B)

  • Where to Measure: Around the broadest part of your hips and buttocks.
  • How to Measure: Stand naturally with your feet together. Wrap the measuring tape snugly around the fullest part, ensuring it's level all the way around.

3. Length (C)

  • Where to Measure: From the point where the kilt will sit on your waist to your desired length.
  • How to Measure:
    • For standard kilts, measure to where you'd like the hem to fall (e.g., mid-thigh, above the knee, or below the knee).
    • For a full-length hostess kilt, measure from your waist to the ankle.

Tip: Always have someone assist you with the length measurement to ensure accuracy and avoid leaning forward, which could distort the results.

    • Ensure the tape measure is straight across the back while taking this measurement.
  • Sleeve Length (B):
    • With your arm straight and relaxed at your side, measure from the ball of your shoulder (or the seam of a well-fitting jacket) to your wrist.

Measuring Guide for Tartan Trousers

Tartan trousers require precise measurements to ensure a tailored and comfortable fit. Below are the steps to accurately measure for made-to-order or stock trousers. Follow these instructions carefully, and don’t hesitate to reach out to Kilt Outfitters for assistance.

Trousers Measuring Guide

1. Waist (A)

  • High-Waist Trousers:
Measure around your waist at the height of your belly button. This is where high-waist trousers typically sit.
  • Regular-Waist Trousers:
Measure around the waistline where standard trousers are worn (just above the hips).

2. Seat/Hip (B)

  • Stand upright with your feet together.
  • Measure around the widest part of your hips and seat (buttocks).
  • Keep the measuring tape level and snug, but do not pull it tight.

3. Inside Leg (C)

  • Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Measure from the groin down to the ankle on the inner side of the leg.
  • This ensures the correct inseam length for your trousers.

4. Outside Leg (D)

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Measure from the waist (where you took the waist measurement) down to the ankle along the outer side of the leg.

Additional Tips

  1. Use a Flexible Measuring Tape: For best results, use a soft tape designed for tailoring.
  2. Assistance Recommended: Have someone else take the measurements to ensure accuracy.
  3. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Stand in light, fitted clothing to avoid adding bulk to your measurements.
  4. Measure Twice: Always double-check your measurements for accuracy.
